Experiences you'll have

The Northern Lights on the Kola Peninsula

This trip is perfect not only as a weekend trip with your friends, but also with children aged 10 years and older. You will be immersed in the culture of the peoples of the North, taste the local cuisine and watch the Northern Lights. You will visit the most spectacular locations of the central part of Kola Peninsula: Lovozero tundras, Seidozero (a sacred place for the Saami), and Teriberka — an ancient pomor (Rus. for "coast-dweller") village on the shore of the Barents Sea.

In the evenings you will search for the Northern lights in the Murmanks’ suburbs, in the Lovozero tundras and on the shore of the Barents Sea.  You will be accompanied by a guide-photographer, so you will be able to bring high-quality shots from your trip.

During 3 days of the trip you will:

  • get acquainted with the traditions of the indigenous peoples of the North and visit the reconstructed Saami settlement
  • feed reindeers and ride huskies sledges through the winter forest
  • visit Teriberka, take a snow-shoe walk along the coast of the Barents Sea and see a frozen waterfall and the fantastic  place, called "Dragon eggs shore"
  • taste the northern delicacies and traditional Saami cuisine

The Northern Lights are the phenomenon of nature. We cannot guarantee that you will see it during your trip. However, we will do our best to make sure your trip leaves the brightest impressions regardless of whether you catch the Aurora or not.

Note: we can hold this program on any other dates for your group of two or more people, see the price in the "Common questions" section.

Itinerary

The journey starts in Murmansk, where you should get to on your own on the first day of the program. The group transfer from the airport is based on Aeroflot flight SU 1320, arriving in Murmansk at 12:10 am. We suggest you choose flights departing from Murmansk after 9 pm as your return flights (we recommend Aeroflot flight SU 1317 at 9:40 pm).

We are ready to assist with the purchase of tickets. If necessary, leave a comment in the application.

Day 1 Meeting the reindeer and dog sledding

After the meeting at the Murmansk airport you will go to the “Traditsii Severa” (Rus. for “Northern Traditions") park. The duration of the trip is 1,5-2 hours, there will be a small snack (lunch-boxes) on the way.

Here you will visit a sled dog kennel that houses more than 90 Siberian huskies. Here also you will see and feed reindeer. Then you will visit the reconstructed Saami settlement, where you will learn a lot about the traditions of the Northern peoples. Further dog sledding tour across a snow-covered pine forest is waiting for you (the route is 5 km, 30 minutes). Afterwards you will have lunch in a warm and cozy chum (a northern teepee).

After the end of the excursion program, you will go to a base on the shore of the Lovozero, where you get accommodation in chums and vezhas —the traditional dwellings of the Saami. In the evening you will have dinner with the northern cuisine specialties, and go to the tundra in the search of the Northern lights. You will be accompanied by a photographer. He will instruct you on the peculiarities of photographing the Northern lights and organize a small photo session for you.

Day 2 Snowmobile tour to the Seidozero

After breakfast you will take a snowmobile trip to the sacred lake of the Saami — Seidozero (the distance of the route is 80 km by snowmobile). The snowmobile program lasts the whole day. Upon reaching the lake, you will have a small picnic and take a walk around the area. According to one of the theories, the ancient Hyperborean civilization dwelled here. During the excursion your guide will tell you why Seidozero has a sacral meaning for the Saami.

You will have lunch upon your return to the base. You will taste a Saami venison soup, baked whitefish with rice, vatrushki (Russian cottage cheese cakes) with cloudberries, cowberries, and blueberries. The departure from Lovozero to Murmansk takes place at 6.30 pm (2,5 hours, a small snack with hot tea is planned along the way).

Upon arrival to the city you will check in to the hotel and have dinner at the restaurant (extra charge). In the evening you will ride off-road cars or vans to chase the northern lights in the suburbs of Murmansk. The duration of the trip will depend on weather conditions and forecasts (5-100 km).

Day 3 Acquaintance with Teriberka village

Today you will have an early breakfast and ride off-road vehicles or microbuses to Teriberka, a village on the shore of the Arctic Ocean. This ancient pomor village became especially popular after the movie "Leviathan" was shot there.

The road from Murmansk to Teriberka turns into a real ice tunnel with giant snow walls up to 3 meters high in the winter. You can admire picturesque landscapes of endless tundra, snow-covered mountains and the coast of the Barents Sea on the way.
When you arrive to Teriberka, you will go on a snowmobile trip around the area (tourists board a passenger sled behind the snowmobile). You will see the so called "graveyard of ships" — half-destroyed remains of old ships left on the shore. You will also see a frozen waterfall, walk along the picturesque "Dragon's eggs shore" — a beach called by the locals for being studded with huge oval boulders.

Afterwards you will have lunch in the "Cedar Grass" or the "Teribersky Bereg" restaurant with the panoramic view of the Barents sea (it is not included into the price of the tour). Then you will go on a walking tour or try snowshoeing along the coast from Teriberka beach to the Orlovka and Zavalishina bays (the route will be chosen depending on the weather conditions and the tour participants' preferences).

After this walk you will return to Murmansk. You will arrive in the city around 6 pm and have dinner at a restaurant before being taken to the airport for your flight.

A snowshoe walk along the coast may not take place in case of bad weather on that day, in which case you will return to Murmansk right after lunch and go on a city tour. You will visit the monument to the Defenders of the Soviet Polar Region, better known as “the monument to Alesha”. See the legendary icebreaker "Lenin" — the world's first nuclear-powered icebreaker. After a walk around the city you will have dinner in a restaurant before being taken to the airport.
