Baikal Ice

During this journey you will cross the legendary lake in the widest and deepest part and will see the cleanest and most beautiful ice on the planet, frozen in incredible forms. Huge ice hummocks and grandiose cracks, clear ice patches and giant ice shards, numerous bubbles and the most unusual ice patterns — this journey will present you hundreds of photos of amazing and always different Baikal ice.

By car, hovercraft and on foot you will cover about 1300 km from Irkutsk to Ulan-Ude visiting the most picturesque places of winter Baikal.

 

You will spend one night in the camp on Baikal ice at the very location where its depth reaches 5000 feet!

Itinerary

The journey begins in Irkutsk, where you should get to on your own. We are ready to help with tickets purchasing, if necessary, please, leave a comment in the application.

Day 1 First meeting with Lake Baikal

After meeting at the airport of Irkutsk at 10:30 am, you will go to Listvyanka village, located on the Baikal shore near the Angara river source. Here you will meet the Lake Baikal for the first time.

 

On the way you will top to visit the ethnographic museum "Taltsy". Here you will discover a typical Siberian village of XVIII-XIX century. The museum has become the place of the conservation of the monuments of the popular culture.

 

Then you will have lunch at a restaurant, where you can taste the famous Baikal omul and other dishes of the local cuisine.


After lunch, you will take the chair lift to the Chersky rock 728 metres above sea level. There is a breathtaking panorama: Listvyanka village, Angara river's source and the skyline flowing with the Baikal waters.


In the evening you will have dinner (extra charge) and stay at the hotel in Listvyanka.

Day 2 On Baikal ice by hovercraft

After breakfast you will be taken to the port. Here your travelling on Baikal ice by hovercraft is starting. You will move to MRS village (Sakhyurta), located on the shore of the Small sea.

 

All journey will be on the ice. On the way you will make several stops in Sandy bay and near the rock Sagan-Zaba to observe the picturesque mountain landscapes and see the world-famous cave paintings, the oldest of which is about 4000 years. 


You will see the Arch Cape that has a very unusual form. It reminds an elephant with its trunk put into the water from one viewpoint, and from another side — grey turtle which gobbles the water, while on the third viewpoint — it is totally an extraterrestrial animal. You will have lunch outdoors and then will continue travelling.

 

Around 4 pm you will arrive to MRS village, stay at the tourist base and have dinner.

Day 3 Olkhon island – the heart of lake Baikal

Today you will travel to the largest and most mysterious island of Lake Baikal — Olkhon. After breakfast you will move to Khuzhir village.

 

On the way you will visit the Ogoy island which is the largest one of the Small sea. On the top of the island there is the Buddhist stupa, that also named "The stupa of the clarification".

 

Also you will visit the Kobylia Golova peninsula (Horse Head, Khorin-lrgi) with the length about 4 km. This place is very tight and cuspate. Its landscape and steep relief are really impressive. The name stems from the fact that one of its capes is shaped like a horse's head.

 

Around 1 pm you will arrive to Khuzhir, stay at the tourist base and have lunch. Then you will have a sightseeing tour around the village. You will visit the famous Burkhan Rock — the cape, which is known as "the residence of the Baikal's God". This place is sacred for shamans and is considered to be one of the the nine sanctuaries of Asia.

 

In the evening you will have dinner (extra charge) and will have rest.

Day 4 Baikal Ice camp

You will have breakfast, and then will go to the middle part of the lake  by 4x4. Welcome to the Baikal ice camp! It is located at the geographical center of the lake, on the boundary of the Irkutsk region and the Republic of Buryatia.

 

En route you will visit the Belenkiy island (White), the habitat of thousand of gulls. Also you will stop near the cape Tri brata (Three brothers, Sagan-Hushun) with its picturesque ice caves as well as will visit the most popular place of the island — the Khoboy cape. Here the giant ice-hummocks remind the radiating rays.

 

Along the way you will have a picnic. Upon arrival to the camp you will take part in the ritual of meeting and greeting where every participant of the group can try to bore the ice.


In the evening you will have a hot meal for dinner and rest in tents. You have a possibility to spend a night on the ice of the lake Baikal over 1500 metres of the water column.

Day 5 Ice entertainments

Today you will have a free day on the Baikal ice. For those who prefer the active rest, we suggest to go skating, play hockey or to walk near the camp.

 

If you are keen of the photo, we suggest you to wake up earlier and take photos of the Baikal ice at dawn. The transparent ice, the ice-hummocks and breaks will allow you to make thousand of beautiful photos.

 

For those who prefer calm rest there is an Ice bar where you could taste the special ice menu. The purest ice is everywhere – around you and even in your glass. Also you can plunge into the purest Baikal water after relaxing in a ice-made Russian banya.

 

At 4:30 pm you will go to Ust-Barguzin village. You will cross Baikal on the ice and will reach the East coast of the lake. Upon arrival to the village you will stay in the private guest house. The hosts will welcome you and treat you to a delicious homemade dinner with national cuisine. Communicating with them you will learn more about the traditions of the locals. In the evening you will go to the bathhouse, specially prepared for you by the hosts.

Day 6 A tour to Chivyrkuysky gulf

After breakfast the guide will offer you to have a tour to the most beautiful bay of Baikal – Chivyrkuisky gulf (extra charge). You will be able to see the seven Islands – natural monuments and visit the hot springs.

 

You will have lunch in the open air, and in the evening you will return to the guest house in Ust-Barguzin. For dinner you can taste Buryat cuisine, go to the bathhouse and relax.

Day 7 Discovery of Ulan-Ude

After breakfast you will move to Ulan-Ude, that is the capital of the Republic of Buryatia. In the beginning the way goes along the bank of the lake and then passes through taiga forests. 

 

You will have lunch in the cafe of traditional Buriat cuisine (is paid on site in cash) and then arrive to Ulan-Ude. Excursion to Ivolginsky datsan is waiting for you here. It is considered to be a monument of history and architecture and the centre of Buddhism in Russia, located in a beautiful steppe.

 

In the evening you will have dinner (is paid additionally). At 10:30 pm you are going to depart to Irkutsk by night train. 

Day 8 Departure to Moscow

At 07:15 am you will arrive to Irkutsk. Then you will be taken to the airport.

Accommodation during the trip

The first night of the trip you will spend in Listvyanka, staying at "Baikalskiye terema" hotel in a standard twin room with all amenities. There are 2 single beds, a table, bedside tables, a TV, a bathroom with shower in the room.

 

On the second night you will stay at the tourist base "Naratey", located in the Sakhyurta village on the Maloe more. The standard twin room has 2 single beds and a bathroom.

 

The next night of the tour you will spend at the tourist base "Nabaymar", located in Khuzhir village on the Olkhon island. You will be accommodated in standard twin rooms of economy class (a shower and a toilet are on the floor).


On the fourth day you will stay in "Baikal Ice Camp", located in the geographical center of lake Baikal. You will spend the night in heated tents, designed for 3-5 people. There are two bunk and one standard tourist bed with a mattress, warm down sleeping bags. The camp's area includes a kitchen-dining tent, where a professional chef will prepare a hot meal for you, an instructor tent and a warehouse tent, an ice bath and an Ice bar with a specially designed ice menu.

 

From the fifth to the seventh day you will live in the guest house in Ust-Barguzin village. You will be accommodated in twin rooms of simple comfort. The toilets and a shower are outdoors. The last night of the tour you will spend in the train compartment.

Who will be my guide +

You will be accompanied by experienced guides. They provide security on the route and have first aid kit, GPS navigator and a satellite phone.

The cost of the tour includes accident insurance for persons under 65 years. Travel and health insurance are paid additionally.

Can I take part +

No particular physical condition is required.  You will have 1-3 hours of physical activity daily.

Meals +

The tour price includes breakfasts on days 2-7, lunches on days 1-6 and dinners on days 2,4-6. In restaurants and guest houses you will taste national traditional cuisine. During the day you will have picnics for lunch and hot meals in the evening.

What equipment is provided +

You will be provided with ice studs for shoes, so you can walk on ice safely.

 

During your stay at BaikalNature Ice Camp you will be provided with warm sleeping bags and felt boots (Russian valenky).

Visa +

You need a tourist visa to travel to Russia. It can be issued for a maximum period of 30 days. Your passport has to be valid for at least six months after the expiry date of your visa and to have at least two blank pages.

What will be the weather like +

This tour is organized in mid-February and in March when the weather on the lake is usually fair. However, it may happen that the temperature falls under 4°F (20°C), that a strong wind starts to blow or that the fog suddenly descends over the lake.
