RussiaDiscovery founder Vadim Mamontov moderated the session “The Far East — Land of Adventure” at the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) on September 4. He later reported the key discussion points to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The proposals included the following:

  • Develop regional aviation — transport accessibility is key to tourism in the Russian Far East.
  • Consider building several hotels with a total capacity of at least 120 rooms—spread across different locations, and possibly even different regions. Concentrating this number of rooms in a single property is often excessive for the Far East.
  • Expand the range of expedition cruises in the Far East and the Arctic—these are in demand not only among Russian travelers but also international visitors. This would require increasing the number of ports accessible to cruise ships, as well as embarkation and disembarkation points.
  • Simplify visa procedures for international tourists traveling to the Russian Far East.

“We need to promote our tourism both domestically and internationally. It’s important to elevate and hold an adventure tourism forum at the federal level. Tour operators are ready to share their experience with one another. A ‘constructive audit,’ which is an integral part of such an event, will improve service quality and help popularize adventure tourism within the country,” Vadim Mamontov noted.

He emphasized that many of the proposals were supported by the President during the discussion itself—now the next step is to compile a list of the necessary directives together with the Ministry for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic.

The 9th Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) is taking place on September 3–6 in Vladivostok. It is a leading platform for driving the development of the Far East’s economy and expanding international cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

At last year’s forum, five regions—Buryatia, Yakutia, Zabaykalsky Krai, Khabarovsk Krai, and Amur Oblast—signed a memorandum of cooperation to develop tourism along the Baikal–Amur Mainline (BAM). Vadim Mamontov took part in an expert tour and a strategic session as part of this initiative.
