The width of the narrowest part of Baikal is 24 kilometers. The Baikal basin is the deepest continental depression. At the bottom of the lake, there are 2 mountain ranges: Selenginsky and Akademichesky. The highest points of the latter are Ushkanyi and Olkhon Islands.

Many inhabitants of this grandiose lake and its surroundings are endemic. Among them is the copepod Epischurella baikalensis. Thanks to it, Baikal remains the cleanest lake in the world.
