Experiences you'll have

A snowmobile tour to Kizhi island

In this journey on snowmobiles you will explore Karelia and see truly unique places of the region. The main highlight of the tour will be a visit to the famous Kizhi island — the most popular place of international tourism to Karelia, included in the UNESCO World Heritage sites. In winter and early spring there are few tourists here. It will allow you to admire the beauty of the winter landscapes of the ancient Kizhi Pogost in quiet and relaxed ambiance.

UNESCO World Heritage sites, historical locations and snowmobile adventures as well as comfortable accommodation near Kizhi Island are gathered in one tour.

Just for 3 days of the tour you will:

  • learn how to drive a snowmobile and will ride about 240 km on snow-covered forest trails and ice of lakes
  • enjoy the beauty and silence of Karelian nature
  • visit historical places and ancient villages, which preserves the masterpieces of Russian wooden architecture and icon paintings dating back to  XIV-XVIII centuries

Note: the tour program can be slightly changed due to the weather conditions.

You will be met at the railway station of Petrozavodsk at 08:55 am on the first day of the program (by the time of arrival of the train № 018 from Moscow).

Day 1 Route to Bolshoi Klimetsky island

You should arrive in Petrozavodsk in the morning. If you come with a train, you will be met on the railway station. After that you will have breakfast in a cafe.

Next you will be transferred to the starting point of the itinerary — Kedrozero village. Here you will pick up the equipment and have a safety briefing, as well as a training concerning the main snowmobile driving rules.

Today you will move from Petrozavodsk Bay of Lake Onega to Sennaya Guba village. The route is via ice of Lake Onega and forest roads. You will have a stop for having lunch.

On the way you will explore old Karelian villages. One of them is Yuzhniy Dvor or Vegoruksa — one of the most ancient villages in the region of Zaonezhye. In XV-XVI centuries there was an important trade route from Novgorod to the White Sea. You will see St.Nicholas Church that was built in XVII-XVIII and replaced the old church that was located here earlier. It was like a lighthouse for ships that were passing the trade route. The architecture of the church is very typical for this region. Inside, there are many icons including the ones that date back to XIV-XV centuries; the ceiling is decorated with paintings.

In the evening you will come to a guesthouse at Bolshoi (Big) Klimetsky island. Here, you will be accommodated in the double rooms, have dinner and relax in a sauna.

The length of the route is 80 km by snowmobiles.

In Podielniki village you will explore Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel and the chapel of St. Varlaam Khutynsky. On the way you will have a stop for lunch.

On Kizhi Island you will have an excursion. This is an open-air museum of wooden heritage known worldwide. Chapels, houses, barns and mills of  XVII-XIX centuries supplement the main architectural ensemble. Altogether they represent the creativity and skills of masters of that times.

In the evening you will come back to the guesthouse. Here, you will have dinner and rest.

The length of the route is 80 km by snowmobiles.

Day 3 Departure to Moscow
