Day 1 Shardons Islands and Yuzhniy Dvor village

You should arrive in Petrozavodsk in the morning. If you come with a train, you will be met on the train station. After that, you will have breakfast in a hotel in the city. Then, you will be transferred to the starting point of the itinerary.

On the way you will explore old Karelian villages. One of them is Yuzhniy Dvor or Vegoruksa — one of the most ancient villages in the region of Zaonezhye. In XV-XVI centuries here there was an important trade route from Novgorod to the White Sea. You will see St.Nicholas Church that was built in XVII-XVIII and replaced the old church that was located here earlier. For ships that were passing the trade route it was as a lighthouse. The architecture of the church is very typical for this region. Inside, there are many icons including the ones that date back to XIV-XV centuries; the ceiling is decorated with paintings.

In the evening you will come to a guesthouse. Here, you will accommodate yourself in the rooms, have dinner and relax in a steam house.

On Kizhi Island you will have an excursion. This is an open-air museum of wooden heritage known worldwide. Chapels, houses, barns and mills of  XVII-XIX centuries supplement the main architectural ensemble. Altogether they represent the creativity and skills of masters of that times.

Not far away from Kizhi Island there is Yeglov Island with a village that has a unique architectural composition. Several old houses are located along a shore of the lake. In front of them on a small island there is a chapel that can be seen from windows of every house.

In Podielniki village you will explore Paraskeva Pyatnitsa Chapel and the chapel of St. Varlaam Khutynsky.

In the evening, you will come back to the guesthouse. Here, you will have dinner and rest.
