Horse-riding tour to the Shavlinsky lakes 

Breathtaking views of the Altai nature attracts travelers from all over the world. You will take a sightseeing tour to this wonderful land, get acquanted with the local traditions and cuisine, and take a horse-riding hike to one of the most beautiful Altai mountain lakes — the Shavlinsky Lakes, where it is difficult to travel to on foot.

To join this tour you need a good physical training and experience of horse riding.  In 11 days  you will drive more than 1500 km by car and 75 km on horseback, reaching the most remote and picturesque places of the Altai. Also hiking to the mountain lakes and rafting down the Chuya river are in the program

Highlights of the journey:

  • you will drive along the Chuisky tract, which is in the top 10 of most beautiful roads in the world, according to National Geographic
  • see the famous turquoise Katun river and the picturesque Chulyshman river's valley
  • feel yourself like on the Mars, observing the panorama of the colorful Kyzyl-Chin mountains

Itinerary

The journey begins in Novosibirsk or Barnaul, where you should travel to by your own. We are ready to help with the purchase of tickets, if necessary, leave a comment in the application.

Day 1 Chuisky tract and Karakol river's valley

After meeting the group at the airport you will have breakfast at the city cafe and then move to the Karakol valley. On route you will stop to have lunch and taste the local cuisine: “maral” (deer meat) and “kharius” (fish) .

 

Next you will continue the journey along the Chuisky tract, which is included to the top of 10 most beautiful roads in the world. You will overcome the famous Seminskiy pass, where you will make a stop at the market and near the commemorative stele. Then you will move the one of the most mysterious and revered places of Altai — the Karakol river's valley.

 

You will have arrived to the hotel by the evening, check-in and rest. Then you will have dinner in the traditional Altai house, named "ail". Here you not only taste the national cuisine, but also enjoy the throat-singing show, presented by the locals.

 

The route length: 180-480 km by car, 1,5 km on foot.

Day 2 Uch Enmek National park

Today a sightseeing tour of the archaeological and cultural monuments of the Uch Enmek National park is waiting for you. This place has a great value for the Altai people. Here, over the centuries, locals do many different shamanistic rituals and Uch Enmek Mount is the second in importance (after Belukha Mount). 

 

Archaeologists from all over the world come to these places to unravel the significance of the unusual ancient structures. Altaians believe that people who come to these places with pure thoughts leave it with the tripled force of love and kindness.


Further you will continue travelling along the Chuisky tract through the Chike-Taman pass (1460 m) and the rocky shores of the Bolshoi (Russian for "Big") Yaloman river. Here you will make a stop for having lunch.

 

Then you will move to the Yin village, where you will visit Tsaplinsky bridge and the elder stone sculptures. Next, you will stop at the confluence of the Chui and Katun rivers, which is believed to be the strong "place of power". Here you will see the "Kalbak-Tash" rock paintings — over 7000 petroglyphs of various eras.

 

During this tour you will have enough time to enjoy the magestic natural landscapes, take photos and watch the local birds and animals. In the evening you will arrive to the hotel, have dinner and rest.

 

The route length: 160 km by car, 2,5 km on foot.

Day 3 Altai Mars and rafting on the Chuya river

After breakfast and morning photo shoots you will go to the unique place, called "Altai Mars". Rocks and landscapes here are unusual red-yellow colors, somewhere they lie in the form of bright layers, somewhere they mix up or intertwine in the form of fancy patterns. All these colors give the landscape a cosmic look.

 

Here you will take some light hiking to the mountains, look for the fossilized remains of ancient shells and have a picnic in a grove of a small oasis. 

 

Afternoon a rafting on the Chuya river is waiting for you. It has the third category of complexity (rafting is paid additionally). Then you will return to the hotel, have dinner and rest. 

 

The route length: 180 km by car, 3 km on foot, 12 km rafting.

Day 4 Horse-riding route to the Shabaga river

After breakfast you will be given all necessary instructions according the further horse-riding route. Then you will be taken by car to the starting point. 

 

You will ride a horse to the headwaters of the Oroy river. From the Chuya River the trail is steeply gaining height and goes to a plateau, to a height of about 1 700 m high. Here you could enjoy the breathtaking views of the North-Chuya Range. You will have lunch on route and continue riding to the place, where the Shavla and Shabaga rivers merge. Here you will set up a camp, have dinner and spend a night in tents.

 

The route length: 8 km by car, 17 km on horseback.

Day 5 Horse-riding route to Lake Lower Shavlinsky

After breakfast you will continue the horse-riding route to Lake Lower Shavlinsky. The trail goes to the floodplain of the Shavla river, among the trees, there is often marshy soil underfoot. You will have to overcome a steep ascent across the ancient moraine slope (1983 m high) to reach the lake. 

 

Then you will set up a camp, in which you will stay for the next two days. You will have free time on the lake. You can enjoy swimming in the icy lake after visiting Russian sauna. In the evening a festive dinner with the rite of fulfillment of desires in front of a large fire is waiting for you. 

 

The route length: 24 km on horseback.

Day 6 Radial hiking to Lake Upper Shavlinsky

After breakfast you will prepare for the hiking route to Lake Upper Shavlinsky. It is located at the altitude of 2500 m above the sea level. A narrow path goes straight along the valley between the mountains.

 

On route you will admire the beautiful view of the mountain giants — the peaks with romantic names "Dream", "Beauty" and "Fairy Tale". The extraordinary beauty and energy of this place makes it possible to held different spiritual practices with great efficiency.

 

In the evening you will return to the camp, have dinner and rest. You will listen to the different Altai legends and can sail a boat on the lake.

 

The route length: 12 km on foot.

Day 7 Hiking to the Lower Shavlinsky pass

After breakfast you will have a radial hike to the pass (the 1st category of complexity). From the top you can observe a stunning view of the Lower and Upper Shavlinsky Lake, surrounded by a snow-capped mountain peaks. Then you will return to the camp and rest. Dinner and a hot Russian sauna are waiting for you in the evening.
 

The route length: 8 km on foot.

Day 8 Start of a reverse route from the Shavlinsky Lakes

After breakfast you will gather the camp and say farewell to the Shavlinsky lakes. Today you will have a big reverse passage along the rivers to the camping on the Shabaga river. In the evening you will have dinner and spend a night in tents.

The route length: 20 km on horseback.

Day 9 Arrival to Chibit village

Today you will continue the horse-riding route through the Oroy pass to the Chibit village, where you will be accommodated at the hotel. In the evening you will go to the Russian sauna and have a festive dinner.

The route length: 24 km on horseback.

Day 10 Return transfer to Barnaul and Novosibirsk

Today is the final day of your journey to Altai. After breakfast you will drive along the most beautiful and picturesque part of the Chuisky tract toward the Seminskiy pass. On route you will stop to have lunch and visit the souvenir market, where you can buy various products of local artisans.

 

At 2 pm transfer to Gorno-Altaysk, Barnaul and Novosibirsk will be organized (arrival to Gorno-Altaysk is planned at 3 pm, to Barnaul – at 7 pm, to Novosibirsk – at 11 pm). Upon arrival to the city you will have dinner and spend a night in the hotel near the airport.

 

The route length: 1,5 km on foot, 330-780 km by car.

Today you will depart home.

Accommodation during the trip

At the first day of the tour you will stay in "Uch-Emnek" Hotel in double/twin rooms (toilet and shower outside the room on the floor). The hotel is located in the Karakol river's valley on the territory of the Uch Enmek Natural Park.

 

Three nights of the tour (days 2-4, 9-10) you will spend at the "Nomad" tourist complex, located near the Chibit village, at the confluence of the Chuya and Chibitka mountain rivers. You will be accommodated in the comfortable hotel double or twin rooms with the own bathroom. There are a TV, a fridge, a table and chairs, a kettle and free Wi-Fi in the room. You can visit a Russian sauna, a paintball club, a wellness centre. Also there are different sport courts for playing tennis, football, basketball and volleyball at the tourist complex area.

 

During the horse-riding route to the Shavlinsky lakes (days 4-9) you will live in the tents (for 2 people). The last night of the tour before departure you will spend in the hotel in Gorno-Altaisk or Novosibisk or Barnaul, located near the airport.

Who will be my guide +

During the whole tour you will be accompanied by the English-speaking guides (1-2 people). Also 2 or 3 horse breeders and a cook will escort you during the horse-riding routes.

Meals +

The price of the tour includes three meals a day (breakfasts, lunches and dinners in a cafe with a traditional cuisine, as well as packed lunches and field kitchen).

How a group transfer is organized +

A transfer service is available from the city of arrival. Please, note, that the local time is indicated in the program (the difference with Moscow +4 hours).

 

Day 1. Transfer from Novosibirsk and Barnaul:

  • at 5:15 am — meeting the group at the airport of Novosibirsk
  • at 7 am — meeting the group at the airport of Barnaul

 

Day 10. Transfer to Gorno-Altaisk, Novosibirsk and Barnaul:

  • at 2 pm — transfer from the souvenir market to Gorno-Altaysk, Barnaul and Novosibirsk
Can I take part +

This tour is suitable for physically trained people and people with horse-riding experience. During hiking the baggage is transported by the pack-horses.

 

We strongly recommend you to take riding lessons in equestrian clubs of your city before you join this tour. All participants should know the basic principles of horse riding, be able to trot and gallop and feel confident in the saddle. On route the participants are not allowed to go into a gallop, the group moves one by one in a column, however, your should be able to stay in the saddle and gallop in case of an emergency situation.

Can children take part +

Children aged from 12  to 18 years old accompanied by parents can participate in the tour.

Tick-borne encephalitis vaccination +

We highly recommend to get a tick-borne encephalitis vaccination, especially for May-June arrivals. In Russia vaccination is done in 2 parts. The first vaccine is made 45 days before arrival to Russia. The second vaccine — 7-14 days before arrival to the Altai region.

 

The vaccination process might differ in your country. For details, please contact your doctor. If you are not willing to go through vaccination process, please, be assured that your medical insurance covers tick-borne encephalitists.
