Experiences you'll have

Aboard the Professor Khromov, you will journey along the Chukotka coastline to Cape Dezhnev and back. Each day, you will land on pristine coasts.

Wander through the wild, blooming tundra. Enjoy breathtaking mountain views. Visit traditional villages and immerse yourself in the culture of the Chukchi and Eskimo peoples. Get close to whales and walrus rookeries by Zodiac boats.

The onboard program includes lectures on Chukotka’s nature and history, film screenings, and workshops.

On this cruise, you will be accompanied by Russian- and English-speaking guides

Expedition highlights:

  • Close encounters with walruses, whales, seals, and rare seabirds
  • Cape Dezhnev, the easternmost point of Eurasia and continental Russia
  • Whale Bone Alley – a unique monument of ancient Yupik culture
  • Natural thermal springs with views of Chukotka’s rugged landscapes
  • Visit to Chukotka's first bone-carving workshop in the village of Uelen
  • Tasting local delicacies, including whale and walrus meat

Itinerary

The journey begins in Anadyr, where you should get to on your own on the first day of the program.

We are ready to help you to buy air tickets. If necessary, please make a note in your booking request.

The tour program may change depending on weather conditions.

Day 1 Embarkation in Anadyr, Chukotka

Upon arrival at the airport, you will be transferred to the port of Anadyr. After boarding the vessel Professor Khromov and settling into your cabin, you will enjoy lunch and attend a safety briefing. Then, you will meet the crew and expedition team before heading out to sea. In Anadyr Bay, you will have the chance to spot beluga whales.

Day 2 Meechkin Spit. In Search of Walruses

Today, your vessel will stop near the shores of Meechkin Spit, which is actually a narrow, very long island. It stretches 60 kilometers in length but is only about 100 meters wide.

On expedition boats, you will head to a massive walrus rookery and observe them up close. On the island, you may also spot one of the rarest birds, the spoon-billed sandpiper. If you’re lucky, you might even encounter bears that often swim over from the mainland.

Later, you will visit the cozy village of Egvekinot, often called the “Chukchi Alps.” High, snow-covered hills surround the village, shielding it from the wind – even in winter, the sun often shines here. You will visit the local history museum, considered the best in Chukotka, to learn about the region’s history and take part in a workshop on traditional arts and crafts.

In the afternoon, the ship will continue its journey across Anadyr Bay. During this time, the guides will give lectures about Chukotka, and the onboard lecture hall will feature wildlife documentaries.

Day 3 Yttygran Island and Yanrakynnot Village

On this day, you will land on Yttygran Island to visit the unique monument of ancient Yupik culture – Whale Bone Alley, a sanctuary made of whale skulls and bones embedded in the ground. Researchers believe it was created no later than the 16th century.

In Gilmimyl Bay, you will wander through the blooming tundra and take a dip in hot springs, where over 150 thermal water outlets can be found. Afterwards, you will return to the vessel and sail to Penkigney Bay. There, aboard Zodiac boats, you will search for gray and bowhead whales, getting close enough to see their water spouts.

Next, you will visit the village of Yanrakynnot, located on a hill overlooking the Senyavin Strait, near the mouth of the Marich River. In the surrounding area, you will visit the Whale Graveyard, where hundreds of massive bones stand as a testament to traditional Chukchi whaling practices.

Day 4 Cape Dezhnev and the Village of Uelen

Today, you will reach the easternmost point of mainland Russia and all of Eurasia – Cape Dezhnev. On clear days, you can see Alaska from here, just 86 km away across the Bering Strait.

You will visit a lighthouse monument dedicated to Semyon Dezhnev, who discovered the Bering Strait and proved that America was a separate continent. The actual tip of Eurasia lies 12 km from the monument. Like Dezhnev in 1648, you will not disembark at the cape itself, as it is surrounded by sheer cliffs.

Next, you will visit the village of Uelen, the easternmost settlement in Eurasia and a major hub for traditional ivory carving by northern Indigenous peoples. You will learn about the culture of the Chukchi and Eskimo communities and visit Chukotka’s first ivory-carving workshop, established in 1931. Then, you will sample local delicacies, including fish, caviar, and whale and walrus meat.

In the afternoon, you will land on Ratmanov Island, Russia’s easternmost island, located near the American island of Little Diomede. The two rocky islands are separated by the International Date Line and are often called “Tomorrow Island” and “Yesterday Island.” Nearby, you may also spot a walrus rookery.

Day 5 The Village of Lorino

Today, the vessel will stop at Lorino, the capital of Russian whaling. Whaling in Chukotka is permitted only for Indigenous peoples of the North.

Nearby, you will also find the Lorino hot springs.

Day 6 Providence Bay

After a long crossing of the Bering Strait, your ship will enter Providence Bay.

Here, you will see numerous fjords and narrow inlets, surrounded by dark hills rising up to 800 meters. This is one of the most picturesque places on the Chukotka coast – a narrow bay stretching 34 kilometers, with a uniquely rugged shoreline. The harsh climate and frequent fog add a mysterious charm to the landscape.

You will go ashore in the village of Provideniya (Russian for "Providence") and visit the Beringia Heritage Museum. There, you will learn about the lives of the Indigenous peoples, including the Chukchi, Evenks, and Eskimos, and have the chance to purchase unique souvenirs, such as carvings made from walrus tusks or whale vertebrae.

Day 7 At Sea

Professor Khromov will set course for Anadyr, giving you time to relax after days full of adventure. You can enjoy the onboard sauna, unwind at the bar, or share experiences with fellow travelers in the cozy lounge.

Day 8 Returning to Anadyr

Early in the morning, the vessel will arrive at the port of Ugolnye Kopi in Anadyr. Ashore, a transfer will be waiting to take you to your hotel or the airport for your flight home.

Common questions

+ Maximize Minimize

Who will be my guide +

The ship will have a Russian- and English-speaking crew. The cruise will be led by an experienced expedition leader and regional experts, who will offer a variety of thematic lectures and presentations on board. You will also enjoy screenings of wildlife films.

Meals +

You will have three meals a day with plenty of seafood. Meals are prepared by the chef of the restaurant.

What to bring with me +

When choosing clothing and footwear, take into account the peculiarities of the Arctic region. Temperatures can drop below freezing at the northern points of the route. Sometimes there are no landings on the shore and the boats go along the shore.

Keep in mind that it can be very windy on the coast, this adds to the temperature effect. There will be splashing on the boat even in small waves, so clothing should be waterproof and windproof. The main heat loss occurs through the head, arms, and legs – pay maximum attention to these places. We recommend taking a camping seat with you. Don't forget about equipment: you need a waterproof case for shooting in rain and drizzle.

Clothing: warm pants, waterproof pants, thermal underwear, sweater, turtleneck, wool hat covering ears, balaclava/scarf, warm socks, waterproof hooded jacket. You can bring dressy clothes for the farewell party (heeled shoes are not recommended).

Footwear: trekking boots (not compulsory, but recommended for long walks on the shore). If you prefer trekking boots to rubber boots, you should bring them with you in your backpack and change them on the shore. Boots with grooved soles will give you the most stable footing. Rubber boots are also necessary, but they can be given free of charge on the first day of the cruise. It is important to bring warm insoles with you. If you plan to bring your boots, they should be mid-calf height or higher with thick ribbed non-slip soles. Some landings will require stepping into water up to 25 centimeters deep. It can also be quite slippery on the ice and on the shore. Make sure the boots fit comfortably with a wool sock. You will also need sandals, sneakers, or any other comfortable shoes for the ship, and flip-flops for the shower.

Other: a small backpack for landings (preferably waterproof), warm and waterproof gloves, sunglasses, cream (in windy weather preferably greasy nourishing), lipstick, binoculars, earplugs, swimsuit (for baths, hot springs, and optional bathing in the ocean), towel.

Documents: passport, airplane ticket, copy of insurance.

Insurance +

Medical insurance is a mandatory condition. Insurance is not included in the cost of the cruise, it must be paid for additionally. If you need help with its registration, please tell the manager when booking.
