Experiences you'll have

Journey to the edge of the world

In this expedition, you will see how people live in the Far North and try your hand at being a real nomad. You will learn to drive a dog sled at “musher school” and spend a few nights in the locals’ homes and at the reindeer herders' camp.

Traveling across the endless tundra, the lack of "civilization" for hundreds of kilometers around, severe northern food and hospitality of the people living on the edge of the world – all this will remain in your memory for a long time!

While sledding along the route you will be accompanied by professional mushers – the winners of previous races, and the sleds will be pulled by a unique breed of Chukchi sled dog

During this expedition you will:

  • cover about 300 km by dog sleds through snow-covered tundra and reach Сape Dezhnev — the easternmost continental point of Russia and Eurasia
  • visit the remote Chukchi settlements Lorino and Uelen, where the traditional way of life has remained unchanged for centuries
  • spend time with families of the mushers and meet natives of Chukchi and Eskimos cultures
  • meet reindeer herders and learn how a modern nomad's life is organized
  • try to cook reindeer meat on your own and take a master-class in lasso throwing and bone carving
  • swim in the northernmost hot springs in Russia

The route passes in the border area of the Russian Federation. For foreign citizens, including citizens of the CIS, it is necessary to issue a border pass. You need to submit the documents for it 40-45 days before the start of the tour.

Note: until the end of August 2021, you can book this tour at a special early booking price for 328 EURO per person. Later the cost of the tour may increase.

Itinerary

The journey begins in Anadyr, where you should get to on your own. We recommend the UTair Аirline flight arriving in Anadyr at 12:45 am. We are ready to assist with the purchase of tickets. If necessary, leave a comment in the application.

Note: the dates of the expedition and the itinerary can change. It depends on the "Nadezhda" race days, the severe weather conditions in Chukotka and domestic flights' scheduling. Please, check with your manager before buying tickets.

Day 1 Arrival in Anadyr

After meeting at the Anadyr airport you will be taken to the city. You will be accommodated in a hotel, have lunch and rest.

Day 3 Meet the mushers

After breakfast at the hotel you will be brought to the airport to take a flight to the Lavrentiya village. Then you will be transferred to the Lorino village by TRECOL or UAZ all-terrain vehicles. Your way will pass through the snowy tundra.

More than 90% of the population here are Chukchi.

Lorino is often called the "whaling capital of Russia". Every year about 40 whales are caught in this area. You will get acquainted with the history of sea fishing and discover the way of contemporary village life. You will then visit the bone carving workshop, where you can take part in a master-class, order souvenirs and meet representatives of Eskimos and Chukchi cultures.

Dinner will be hosted by the mushers: you will taste homemade food and traditional dishes. In the evening you will listen to a lecture on the history of whaling, given by the guide and the head of the local community.

Day 4 "Musher school"

After breakfast you will go to "musher school”: you will be introduced to the sled dogs and learn how to control the sled. Then you will make a training trip to the Lorino hot springs (15 km, 1 hour), some of the northernmost hot springs in Asia. You will swim in the thermal pools and have a picnic. Back to the village you will be taken by car and the sled will be driven by mushers.

Day 12 Returning home

You will have breakfast, pack your bags and leave the hotel. Before you leave, you will have a guided tour to the abandoned Gudym military base.

This is the former Soviet and Russian Strategic Missile Forces base and accompanying military town. The base was finally abandoned by the military in 2002, and the population of the town was relocated to other cities. You will walk through the abandoned buildings and listen to the guide’s stories about the history of the place.

A picnic with army MREs (ready-to-eat meals) will await you at the base, after which you will be taken to Anadyr airport for your flight to Moscow.
