Experiences you'll have

Traveling along the Chuysky Tract

Traveling along the Chuysky Tract is one of the easiest ways to see both historical sights and amazing natural landscapes of the Altai Mountains. You will not have to go on foot with heavy backpacks, all travels will not be tiresome and you will have comfortable accommodation during the route. This is especially important for those who come to Altai for the first time.

You will stay at a modern glamping on the bank of a mountain river in the Kurai steppe, and make daily radial treks through the most picturesque spots of the Altai Mountains.

The route passes through almost all the iconic places of the region. On the way to the glamping you will admire the must-see natural sights, while on your way back you will visit archeological and historical monuments, getting acquainted with the culture and customs of the Altai natives.

During this tour you will:

  • hike to Djangyskel Lake surrounded by mountains over 4,000 m high
  • drive up Aktru valley on cross-country vehicles and hike to the age-old glaciers
  • touch the ancient Stone Warriors and petroglyphs of Kalbak-Tash sanctuary
  • take pictures on the famous Geyser Lake shore
  • visit "the Mars of Altai" and explore the fantastic canyons of Kyzyl-Chin river valley
  • climb up to the observation platform of Kurai Mountain Range, where you can see the peaks of Altai Mountains stretched hundreds of kilometers away
  • get to know the history of the indigenous people of Altai: Huns, Turks and Scythians, and listen to traditional throat-singing, performed by a local narrator – kaichi

Itinerary

The journey begins in Gorno-Altaisk, where you should get to on your own. We recommend a flight with S7 Airlines departing Moscow at 12:45 am on the first day of the tour and from Gorno-Altaisk at 10:10 am on the last day of the trip.

We are ready to help with tickets purchasing. If necessary, leave a comment in the application.

Day 1 Arrival in Gorno-Altaisk

After meeting your guides at the airport of Gorno-Altaisk you will take a trip along the Chuysky Tract – one of the most beautiful roads in Russia. The historical Chuysky Tract is a part of the modern road from Biysk to the Mongolian border about 630 km long.

Along the Chuysky Tract lay many famous natural and historical places of interest. Your first stop will be at the Arzhan-Suu spring, where you will taste its healing waters. Then you will cross the Seminsky (1717 m) and Chike-Taman (1295 m) passes and stop at a picturesque place of confluence of Katun and Chuya rivers.

Then you will continue your journey along the Chuysky tract and drive along the Kurai steppe to a modern eco-hotel, where you will stay for the next several days. You will be accommodated in cozy domed houses with panoramic views of snow-covered peaks of the North-Chuysky mountain range, have dinner and rest.

Stage length: 380 km by minibus, 15 km by cross-country vehicle and 3 km on foot.

Day 2 Djangyskel lake

After breakfast you will trek across the Kurai steppe to the picturesque lake Djangyskel. From here you will admire a wonderful view of the snow-covered Kurkurek peak (3930 m high), and see the traces of the ancient glacial lake’s waves across the land.

You will have a picnic on the lakeshore and the guide will introduce you to the history of these places. Around 3 pm you will return to the glamping and have dinner. In the evening you will relax and steam in the Altai bathhouse on the bank of the mountain river and admire the beautiful starry sky.

Stage length: 15 km by foot and 10 km by cross-country vehicle.

Day 3 Aktru glaciers

This day you will have a chance to learn what real Altaian lack of roads really is. You will ride a cross-country vehicle up along the Aktru valley – the first 10 km you will drive along the taiga gradually gaining altitude. Then you will walk to the Maly (Rus. for "Small") and Bolshoy (Rus. for "Big") Aktru glaciers. You will see a magnificent waterfall and the remnants of moraines from ancient glaciers tens of thousands of years old. You will have a picnic by the glacier overlooking the majestic mountains, then go back down and return to the hotel on all-terrain vehicles.

If you do not want to go up to the glacier, you will have lunch at Aktru base and then take a walk around the area. Afterwards both groups will get together and head back to the hotel.

Stage length: 25 km by cross-country vehicle, 15 km on foot.

Day 4 "The Altai Mars"

On this day you will continue your trip along the Chuisky Tract in the direction of Mongolia. Desert landscapes, Hunnu and Turkic mounds, a healing spring in Chagan-Uzun are waiting for you here. As well as the high-mountain Chuyskaya steppe with the Kyzyl-Chin mountains, rising in its heart.

Locals call this place the "Altai Mars". Landscapes of the Kyzyl-Chin river valley are colored in different shades of red, from bright orange to dark brown. Walking along these fantastic canyons, you will admire the extraordinary mountain landscapes of the South Chuya Mountain Range and peek into an abandoned mine. You will touch the traces of ancient ocean Tethys and learn about the history of Altai mountains formation.

You will visit a yurt complex for lunch and return to the hotel for dinner.

Stage length: 240 km by cross-country vehicle and 10 km on foot.

Day 5 Ulagan highlands

After breakfast you will explore the ancient lands of Telengits, the descendants of Scythians. You will see the famous Geyser lake, drive through the "Red Gates" – narrow winding passage between the steep red rocks. Then you will have a walk along the shore of picturesque lakes of Ulagan uplands to the sacred pass over the lake Kidelyu and have a hot dinner outdoors. In the evening you will return to the eco-hotel in the Kurai steppe and relax.

Stage length: 150 km by cross-country vehicle, 10 km on foot.

Day 6 Landscapes of the Kurai Steppe

This day you will have a chance to rest at the eco-hotel. Walk around the area, watch golden eagles soaring in the sky or just relax on the bank of a mountain river, enjoying the fresh air and listening to the sounds of the Altai taiga.

In the evening you will taste national cuisine and meet the Kaichi, a local narrator, during which you will get acquainted with the culture of Altai nomads, hear the throat singing and the ancient epic Maadai-Kara.

Stage length: 5 km on foot.

Day 7 Return trip to Gorno-Altaisk

That day you will travel along the Chuysky tract to the hotel on the Lower Katun river. Along the way you will discover new places and sights: you will see the remnants of the ancient Silk Road and the highways of the XIX century, learn the history of the Scythian and Turkic stone warriors and see the ancient rock paintings in the Kalbak-Tash tract. In the evening you will settle into the hotel on the shore of the Katun river, have a dinner and rest.

Stage length: 20 km by cross-country vehicle, 350 km by minibus and 5 km on foot.
