Weekend tour to Karelia

Frozen lakes and magic snow-covered forests, old wooden churches and iron foundries, beauty and history of the Russian North — this small journey to Karelia will be both active and informative.

You will be skiing about 10-15 km a day along the special ski routes and forest trails. In the evenings you will rest at the cozy hotel, taste Karelian cuisine and visit the Russian bathhouse

Just in for 3 days of the trip you will:

  • go skiing at the "Fountains" park where you will see the underground springs, forming the fabulous ice sculptures
  • explore the old Karelian villages in the vicinity of lake Ukshozero
  • get acquainted with the history of the iron foundry, founded at lake Konchezero in 1706 by decree of Peter I
  • visit the water sports centre "Aquatica" in Petrozavodsk

Itinerary

The journey begins in Petrozavodsk, where you should travel to on your own. We are ready to help with the purchase of tickets, if necessary, leave a comment in the application.

 

Meeting the group on the first day of the tour — at 08:55 am at the railway station of Petrozavodsk (by the time of arrival of the train №018 from Moscow).

Day 1 Arrival to Petrozavodsk

You will be met at the railway station of Petrozavodsk and then taken to a cafe. Here you will have breakfast and get acquainted with the guide and other participants of the tour. 

 

Next you will pick the equipment and go to the "Fountains" park. This is ski tracks prepared for cross-country skiing. The route passes through the forest along the bank of the Lososinka river. En route you will enjoy the underground springs, forming the fabulous ice sculptures.


On the route you will have a picnic by the fire. Then you will be taken to the hotel, located on the bank of lake Ukshozero. You will stay in comfortable rooms and have dinner. In the evening, if desired, you can go to the bathhouse (extra charge).

 

The length of the route — 10-15 km on skis, 40 km by car.

Day 2 In the vicinity of Lake Ukshozero

Today skiing across snow-covered lake Ukshozero is waiting for you. You will visit the chapel in the small village of Tsarevichi (Russian for Princes) and will hear the legend about why this place received such a name. On the way you will have a snack (a hot tea with sandwiches). Upon returning to the hotel you will have dinner and go to the bathhouse (extra charge).

 

The length of the route — 10-12 km on skis.

Day 3 The old Konchezero village

After breakfast you will check out, leave you baggage in the hotel luggage office and then will go skiing to the village of Konchezero. The old iron foundries, created in 1706 by decree of Peter I are partially preserved here. You will also see the ancient church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1865-1866 on a hill in the center of the village.

 

On the way you will have a snack and after the ski trip you will be taken to Petrozavodsk. Here you will visit the "Aquatica" water sports centre and will have dinner in a cafe. Then you will be taken to the railway station to the evening train to Moscow.

 

The length of the route — 20 km on skis, 30 km by car.

Accommodation during the trip

You will stay at "Kalevala" Hotel, situated on the rocky bank of the lake Ukshozero, 40 km away from Petrozavodsk. You will be accommodated in comfortable double/twin rooms with all amenities. The room is 15 square metres and has 1 double or 2 single beds, a TV, a phone and a private bathroom with a shower and a towel-dryer). 

 

The hotel has a restaurant with panoramic views of the lake, a cozy bar, a lounge with a fireplace and karaoke, a Finnish sauna with a swimming pool, and two Russian bathhouses on the lake. Also there are a volleyball and basketball court, billiards, table tennis and a children's playground.

An English and French-speaking guide and experienced instructors will accompany you throughout the tour.

Meals +

The tour price include three meals a day. You will have breakfasts and dinners in Petrozavodsk cafe or at the hotel. Also picnics with sandwiches and a hot tea will be provided on the ski routes.

How to get to Petrozavodsk +

We recommend the train №018A from Moscow am or train № 012A from St. Petersburg  with arrival at 08:55 am and 06:50 am respectively at the first day of the tour. As for return tickets, we recommend the trains departing from Petrozavodsk in the evening.
