Experiences you'll have

Tour to Svalbard by snowmobile

Animals, not humans, inhabit this land: wild reindeer grazing in spectacular valleys, seals and walruses basking on the ice floes, and this whole world of wilderness reigned over by the polar bear, the king of the Arctic.

Svalbard is part of Norway, but one of the islands has a living Russian settlement called Barentsburg, as well as two dormant villages. You will get acquainted with the difficult history of the Spitsbergen archipelago and learn a lot about polar explorers and scientists who are connected to the island’s history.

Itinerary: Longyearbyen – Barentsburg – Pyramiden – Longyearbyen

Day driving distance up to 200km. Total snowmobiling distance: 1000km

Itinerary

The journey begins in the city of Longyearbyen — the administrative center and the capital of the Svalbard archipelago. It is the northernmost town in the world, home to only about 2,000 people, and also has the northernmost airport.

We are ready to help with the purchase of tickets. If necessary, leave a comment in the order.

Day 1 Longyearbyen & Barentsburg

Meet & greet at the airport. Transfer to Longyearbyen for briefing. After lunch, get the winter overalls and start the Arctic adventure in the midst of magnificent mountain landscapes, to Cape Heer and further on to Barentsburg. Time to discover Barentsburg, a small Russian mining community with a scientific research center, a meteorological observatory, a cosmic rays station and a school for only a dozen children. Visit the local Lore museum, with its exhibitions on the Pomor culture and the Arctic flora and fauna. Spend the night at the hotel in Barentburg (halfboard).

Snowmobiling 2 people/machine, 50-60 km, 3 hrs

Day 2 Fjords and lakes of Spitzbergen

Head out for a day of wilderness exploration: you leave Barentsburg and follow the coast of Grønfjord.

We drive up to the Grønfjord glacier and across wide canyons, amidst high cliffs. This area was explored by Willem Barentsz over 400 years ago! Lunch will be served at Isfjord Radio, a mythic coast radio and weather station founded in the 20th century at Kapp Linné.

Return to Barentsburg in the evening. Local beer tasting and Russian cuisine for dinner. Spend the night in Barentsburg.(full board)

Snowmobiling 90-140 km, 8-10 hrs

Day 3 Glaciers and fjords

Today's itinerary runs through an impressive site: Sveagruve mine. After a short stop to listen to the guide, we drive to the enormous Paulabreen glacier, 15 km long and considered to be the most picturesque in the world. It is named after shipmaster Richard Ritter von Barry’s wife, Paula.

Lunch is served on the way. This region is famous for frequent encounters with polar bears. We pass the Reindalen, one of the biggest and most impressive valleys on Svalbard (45 km long). Back to Barentsburg. Dinner (Russian cuisine) and a guided walk to the port (full board).

Snowmobiling 180 km, 8-10 hrs

Day 4 Piramiden

Сheck-out and continue exploration of Svalbard's spectacular wilderness. Crossing Tempelfjorden along the ice, we can admire the frozen vessel Noorderlicht.

Across valleys and canyons, we come closer to the glacier Nordenskiøldbreen, a jewel of Svalbard, the largest and most stunning glacier. Driving along the Petunia Bay, we end our day in the ghost town of Pyramiden. Warm welcome from the chef of the Tulpan Hotel, dinner and an overnight stay in Pyramiden (full board).

Snowmobiling 170-180 km, 8-10 hrs

Day 5 The ghost settlement and wild animals

Breakfast and walk around Pyramiden. It was founded by Sweden in the 20th century and then sold to the USSR. This was not just an Arctic outpost, but also an arctic paradise for those who lived and worked there in the Communist spirit. In the end of the 90s, Pyramiden was closed and has since then remained abandoned with all its infrastructure in place. All the buildings are in a good state, but no living soul is around… We cross Dikson land among mighty mountains, cliffs and canyons. We will make a longer stop at the glacier to watch seals, walruses, etc. Return to Pyramiden (full board).

Snowmobiling 100 km, 6-8 hrs

Day 6 On the way to Longyearbyen

Check-out and start one more wildlife snowmobile safari. Not affected by the warm Gulf stream, the Eastern Coast boasts lower temperatures and more austere conditions, as well as abundant ice. Polar bears live on the ice hunting seals, and here we can have an opportunity to spot this mighty animal and watch it from a safe distance.

Lunch on the way, enjoying the arctic silence together with the open landscape. In the evening we’ll arrive at Longyearbyen and check in at the guesthouse of the Arctic Travel Centre. Dinner in the stylish restaurant "On the edge of the world'. Spend the night in Longyearbyen (full board).

Snowmobiling 200 km, 8-10 hrs

Day 7 Optional day

You can spend this day however you want, either by visiting an ice cave, dog sledging, snowshoe hiking, or whatever else you may have in mind!

Day 8 Longyearbyen and departure

After breakfast, a guided walk around the city of Longyearbyen. This morning you can visit Svalbard Museum (optional), covering the history of the Svalbard archipelago, as well as the local wildlife. Svalbard Gallery, exhibiting 40 original pieces by the artist Kåre Tveter, known as the Artist of the Light, is also a good option.

Around 12:00 transfer to the airport of Longyearbyen (half board)
