Experiences you'll have

Summer tour to Cape Dezhnyov

You'll go to the farthest point of Eurasia. First you'll come to Anadyr, the capital city of the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug. It only has about fourteen thousand inhabitants; and yet it's the largest human settlement in Chukotka. You'll spend most of your time during this trip in the villages of Lorino and Uelen.

Lorino is the largest national village in Chukotka. Over 90% of its population are Chukchi. This village is sometimes referred to as the 'whaling capital of Russia'. Every year, some 60 whales are caught in this area. You'll watch whale hunting, visit an Arctic fox farm and a bone-carving workshop. Uelen is the easternmost settlement in Russia and Eurasia. Everything it has is the 'easternmost' specimen of its kind: there are the easternmost post office, the easternmost school, etc. It's the oldest settlement of Chukotka, more than two thousand years old now! Unique bone-carving exhibits created in the 1950s through the 2010s are on display in the local Bone-Carving Art Museum.

Marine motor boats will get you to the base of marine hunters; on the way, you'll watch whales and ringed seals. You'll visit the Lorino Hot Springs and swim there.

The tour program may change due to weather conditions. In particular, whale hunting or the trip to Cape Dezhnyov may be re-scheduled in case of storm surges. Whether the tourists are to put to the sea is up to the captain of the boat. In case your plane to or from Anadyr won't depart due to weather, we offer an alternative program at the client's discretion.

Itinerary

The journey begins in Anadyr, and you have to get there on your own. We are ready to help you buy the tickets; if necessary, leave a comment in your application.

Note that to be in Anadyr by the start of the program, you have to depart Moscow the day before. Contact our manager for details.

Weather in Chukotka is extremely volatile. Aircraft are the only mode of inter-district transport here. Flight delays due to weather are nothing uncommon. You have every chance to 'get stuck' in Anadyr or Egvekinot. To reduce risks, it's recommendable to buy tickets to Moscow after you come back from Egvekinot. The organizers can help you book the tickets for the closest departure of the Moscow flight.

Day 1 Anadyr Tour

We'll meet you at the airport and transfer you to the hotel in the city. Then you'll have a sightseeing tour in the city.

Day 2 Flight to the Village of Lavrentiya

You'll be transferred to the airport and fly aboard a plane to the village of Lavrentiya. Then you'll go to the village of Lorino where you are to stay in an apartment. We'll organize a sightseeing tour for you there, too.

Day 3 To Cape Dezhnyov!

You'll travel to Cape Dezhnyov by a motor boat. Visit the ancient Eskimo settlement of Naukan and boat to the village of Uelen. You'll have a sightseeing tour over the village and visit the bone-carving workshop and the museum. Then you'll go back to Lorino.

Day 4 Marine hunters' base

You'll travel to Cape Akkani, a base of marine hunters, by marine motor boats. On the way, you'll see ringed seals, whales, and bird breeding grounds. You'll have an on-shore walking tour and learn the life and culture of Chukchi. If you wish, you may spend a night in a hunter cabin.

Day 5 Lorino hot springs

On this day, you'll ride in a car to the Lorino Hot Springs. Organize a picnic in the wilds and swim in the hot springs; then you'll go back to the village of Lorino.

Day 6 Whale hunting

You'll watch whale hunting and butchering. You'll have a tour to an abandoned ancient Chukchi settlement. Then you'll go back to Lorino.

Day 7 Breeding grounds

You'll have a motor boat tour to breeding grounds on the coast of the Bering Sea. Then you'll come back to Lorino and visit an Artic fox farm and a bone-carving workshop.

Common questions

+ Maximize Minimize

Who will be my guide +

An experienced guide will meet you at Anadyr Airport and guide you throughout the journey.

Meals +

Meals in Anadyr are provided by the program as a part of your hostel accommodation. If you choose another accommodation option, you'll have to pay for your meals separately. Meals cost anywhere from 350 RUB for a set meal to 2500 RUB (average restaurant bill). Homemade food in Lorino is covered by the tour fee.

What to bring +

Summer-average temperature is about +10-15°С. However, as the tour mostly consists of sea trips, the perceived temperature is going to be around +5°С.

So you have to bring warm clothes: a hooded storm jacket, a fleece jacket (for additional heat insulation), a vest with a synthetic or down insulation, water- and windproof pants or bib-and-brace overalls, warm thermal underwear, a few pairs of warm socks, ankle or trekking boots, warm gloves, and a hat.

Also bring a swimsuit, a towel, and slippers (crocs or something similar) for hot spring swimming. To keep your cameras safe from seawater when boating, take a waterproof backpack. You'll also need sunglasses and individual medicines. As you'll spend a few days and nights outdoors, bring sleeping bags.

Will I need a pass to the border area +

The Chukotka Autonomous Okrug is located in a border area, so the rules of stay are very strict. You'll need a pass to enter Chukotka.

What to do in your spare time +

Anadyr has cafes and restaurants. As for the sights it offers, we'd like to note the Holy Trinity Cathedral, the largest Orthodox temple built on the permafrost, and the Nicholas the Wonderworker monument, the world's biggest monument dedicated to this Saint.
