Tour: Dog sledding in Chukotka

Day 1 (Mon)

1 pm – arrival by an overnight flight from Moscow* in Anadyr, meeting at the airport by your English-speaking activity instructor. Transfer (appr 1 hr) by mini-bus along the road and across the frozen Anadyr Bay from the airport to the city of Anadyr, the largest city of Chukotka. Accommodation in the hotel or in rented apartments (twin-basis).

Lunch in the restaurant downtown.

After lunch you will learn about the history and ethnography of Chukotka during the visit to the Local Lore museum. In order to find out a lot of interesting facts about the town of Anadyr, a multi-colored northern town on the shore of the sea, and feel its ambience today, you will go on a brief city tour of Anadyr.

Group briefing by the instructors about Chukotkan dogs and dog sledding, safety, etc. Dinner and overnight in the hotel or in apartments in Anadyr.

* - departure from Moscow on the eve of Day 1 (i.e. on Sun) at 7 pm from Domodedovo airport, Transaero or Domodedovo flight (duration 8-9 hours)

Day 2 (Tue)

Breakfast. Today is the day of meeting your dogs and training.

Start the day by a short transfer (30 min) to the dog farm located out of Anadyr town in tundra. Meet the friendly dogs, find out more about them from the professional dog-musher, winner of local awards in dog sledding races. Learn the useful details on the harness, sleds, etc. Lunch as a picnic in the field. Today you will also go in dog sleds with a musher and will be coached. After the day of training, you will participate in unharnessing and feeding the dogs.

Return in the evening in Anadyr. Dinner and overnight in Anadyr.

Day 3 (Wed)

Breakfast and transfer to the dog farm. Today you will meet the dogs from your own team, do the harnessing and go dog sledding on your own (with instructors in the head and the end of the caravan).

Lunch as a picnic. Radial dog sledding trip to the Observation Cape, Alyumka island.

Return in the evening in Anadyr. Dinner and overnight in Anadyr.

Day 4 (Thu)

Breakfast and transfer to the dog farm. Today is the day of dog sledding along a serious itinerary from Anadyr to Kanchalan, a settlement of reindeer breeders, which looks modern with its cottages widespread in the northern areas worldwide (70 km long itinerary). Lunch as a snack on the way.

Arrival in Kanchalan. Accommodation in simple conditions (possibly in sleeping bags) cottages or rooms rented from the local hosts. Dinner and overnight in Kanchalan.

Day 5 (Fri)

Breakfast. Take a break in dog sledding and pay a visit by caterpillar all-terrain vehicle to the reindeer herding camp in tundra. Local ATVs are quite a special experience for those who are in Chukotka for the first time.

Meet the reindeer herders, discuss with them their life over lunch. Try out a short reindeer sledding (in sleds with a reindeer herder) and feel how different is reindeer mushing from the dog mushing. Return to Kanchalan. Dinner and overnight in Kanchalan.

Day 6 (Sat)

Breakfast. It is time to go dog sledding from Kanchalan towards Anadyr, across the white vastness of tundra, on the snow of bays and rivers, in the silence and majestic Arctic landscape (70 km). Lunch as a snack on the way.

Return in the evening in Anadyr. Dinner and overnight in Anadyr.

Day 7 (Sun)

Breakfast and transfer to the dog farm. Harness the dogs and go by your team to the place where the race will be held. Lunch as a snack in the field. Do your best in mushing in the dog sledding race for the title of the Best Musher in your group (20 km in tundra). Enjoy the victory or participation. It is time to say good-bye to your dog team.

Return in the evening in Anadyr. Musher’s Certificate award and farewell dinner. Overnight in Anadyr

Day 8

Sun Late breakfast, time on your own in Anadyr. Transfer to the airport and departure for Moscow in the afternoon.

Arrival in Moscow in the afternoon of the same day.
