Tour: Trekking to Klyuchevskaya volcano group

During the trip you’ll visit one of the most spectacular places in Kamchatka – the highest, most active and impressive volcanoes belonging to Klyucheskaya volcano group. You will ascend the Plosky Tolbachik (3085) and Bezymyanny (2880) volcanoes, walk to the new volcano conuses of the Northern break of 1975. You will walk through “the deadforest”, which was destroyed by the ash sediments accompanying the large-scale eruption.

The trekking itinerary passes on a plateau at the altitude of about 1000m above the sea level, across the high-mountainous Alpine meadows and volcanic fields looking like the moon landscape. Trekking with a backpack 15-20 kg; porters available only upon booking well in advance for extra fee

Day 1

Arrival at the airport, transfer to the hotel (20kms). Accommodation, rest.

Day 2
Driving by “off-road” car to the area of the settlement Kozyrevsk (full day, 450km). When the weather is nice, a wonderful picturesque view for the highest volcanoes of Kamchatka will open from the river crossing place close to Kozyresk, and you’ll see all grand volcanoes - Krestovsky (4057m), Ushkovsky (3903m), Klyuchevskoy (4750m), Kamen (4579m), Plosky Tolbachik (3082m) and Ostry Tolbachik (3672m). Spending the night in tents.

Day 3
Driving by “off-road” car to the former seismic station Leningradskaya, at the foothill of the impressive Tolbachik volcano. Visit the northern group of the Tolbachik cones, a peculiar group of multi-coloured volcanic formations, which are volcanoes in miniature (100-200 m high), with traces of lava. Spending the night in tents.

Day 4
A 4-6 hours walk across the ash fields to the spectacular Cones and to the Dead Forest, which was destroyed by scoria and ash eruption in 1975. Spending the night in tents.

Day 5
Ascent to Plosky Tolbachik volcano (3082 m). The ascent is not technically difficult but rather demanding and takes 6-8 hours. At the foot of the rugged walls of the caldera there are powerful fumaroles; the scale of the crater and glacier around the crater ridge are striking the imagination. Spending the night in tents.

Day 6
Trek to the Tolud river across the Alpine meadows. Plenty of berries and flowers on the way. This river is remarkable by its lack of life after the eruption of Tolbachik volcano in 1975. Spending the night in tents.

Day 7
Trek across the Tolud pass (1291 m) up to the Tolbachinsky pass. Quite a new view to Plosky and Ostry Tolbachik, Big Udina (2920 m) and Small Udina (1945), Ovalnaya Zimina (3080 m) is opened from the Tolud pass. Spending the night in tents.

Day 8
Crossing the Tolbachinsky pass (1503 m) up to the famous mountain Polennitza (Pile), which is composed of separate basalt pillars (this object is protected by UNESCO). Trip takes place on the alpine meadows and old lava streams. During the trip you’ll observe the New, Mars and Jupiter craters. These craters appeared at the result of the volcanic activities in 1945. Spending the night in tents.

Day 9
Trek across the pass (1500 m) up to Bezymyany volcano.
See plenty of black-headed marmots (tarbagans) on the way. In a clear weather, enjoy the amazing sunset from the valley, with volcanoes Kamen, Klyucheskaya and Bezymyanny opening up from the mist in the evening light.
Spending the night in tents.

Day 10
Ascent to Bezymyany volcano (2880 m, 8 hours). This summit became very unusual by its relief after the catastrophic eruption in 1958. The new gigantic cone appeared and is growing inside the huge crater. This is an active volcano, stone falling is frequent in the crater. During the ascent and from the top of the volcano you can have breath-taking views over Tolbachik, Udina, Zimina, and far-away volcanoes in the midst of the clouds. Spending the night in tents.

Day 11
A reserve day in case of the bad weather on any of the previous days and another volcano ascent attempt. Otherwise, you can walk on the Mars and Jupiter conuses and relax in the spectacular surroundings. Spending the night in tents.

Day 12
Trek calmly on the alpine highland up to the canyon of the Studyonaya (Icy cold) river. At the canyon rocks you may see flocks of wild snow sheep. Night in tents

Day 13
Trek to the Kopyto (Hoof) hill. Pass the “bear’s tundra” rich in berries, the terrain further will be permanent ups and downs. Driving to the Kozyrevsk settlement by “off-road” car.

Day 14
Driving back to Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky city by “off-road” car (full day). Accommodation at the recreation department in the resort area “Paratunka”. Bathing in the pools with hot thermal water.

Day 15
Transfer to the airport.
