The Khibiny (The Khibinsky tundras)

The Khibiny (The Khibinsky tundras) are a small mountain land located between the Imandra and the Umbozero - the two largest lakes of the Kola Peninsula. This massif mounting above the surrounding forest resembles a giant fortress from afar; from space it looks like a huge flower.
The Khibiny are relatively low; their highest summit is a 1200 m-high Yudytchvumtchorr. The Khibiny slightly differ from the Lovozersky tundras in height (1116 m), but visually there is a striking difference. The Lovozerye is a round dome indented with rather shallow canyons with Seidozero hollow inside. The Khibiny are much more indented with valleys and canyons and these valleys and canyons are much deeper. There is an impression that the Khibiny are higher and their peaks and branches are steeper. Besides, “tchorrs” and “porrs” – peaks having sharp and pointed shape are more common in the Khibiny.
