Kizhi island

Kizhi island is the world-famous open-air museum of wooden architecture. On the island there is a unique ensemble of monuments of the Russian wooden architecture – an amazing creation of the XVII-XIX centuries’ masters. Chapels, izbas, barns, and mills brought here from the surrounding villages add to the main ensemble and demonstrate a variety of methods, types and forms of Old Russian architecture binding together traditions and master’s fantasy.
