A national boundary between Russia and Sweden was established by the Stolbovskiy Peace treaty in 1617. The beginning of water part of the border was marked by a boundary mark, a so-called “Varashev kamen’” that is nowadays recognized as a unique historic monument. This 2-meter high pink-granite stone can be seen from the shore as well as from Lake Ladoga.
