Russia: Kamchatka
Avachinsky volcano

Is located 25 km to the northeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski. This volcano is the most popular volcano of Kamchatka. Thousands of tourists annually mountaineer the volcano because it is not difficult and very convenient to climb; besides, there is a road and a tourist center at the bottom of the volcano. Avachinsky volcano is one of the most active Kamchatka volcanoes. The volcano belongs to a Somma-Vesuvius type. It resembles this Italian volcano very much. The base (somma) of the volcano is what is remained from an ancient volcano that was destroyed by a huge explosion thousands of years ago. The remains are up to 2000 m high and make a volcano collar (an outer ridge) from which a relatively young clinker cone rises. The cone was made by eruptions that took place later. The least height of the cone is about 700 m.
