Mutnovsky volcano

A group of volcanoes Mutnovsky-Goreliy attracts crowds of tourists. It is situated 80 km to the south of PPK. The volcanoes are located on a wide plateau the average height of which is about 1000 m. The region is rich in thermal springs. There are several spring groups along valleys of the rivers running down the plateau – Dachniye, Zhirovskiye, Voinovsky and Rodnikoviye springs. Mutnovsky volcano often reminds of itself producing a steam-and-gas cloud. This cloud can be seen from Petropavlovsk. The height of the volcano is 2323 m. Here you can see brimstone outlets and puddles of boiling mud. The Vulkannaya river along which a part of the path leading to the volcano is tracked, cuts through the bottom and sides of the northern crater of the volcano and falls into Opasniy canyon from the height of 80 m as a powerful waterfall. The volcano has been active in the last years. After a steam-and-gas explosion in 2001 a hidden eastern crater freed itself and a glacial lake formed inside of the crater. A road leading to the volcano is free from snow at the end of July and after that one can get there by an off-road car.
