A West to East Traverse of Lake Baikal

Date: 06.03.2020

In February 2020, sportsmen Ray Zahab, Stefano Gregoretti and Valerie Gagne together with a team of friends have traversed Lake Baikal from west to east. A 250 km long journey took 5 days for the group.

In winter 2019 Ray Zahab and Stefano Gregoretti had a TransKamchatka expedition, and this year they came back to Russia for crossing the deepest lake in the world. For Ray Zahab this was the second adventure on Lake Baikal. In 2010, he did a south to north traverse.

Ray Zahab: “Ten years ago, this month, Kev Vallely and I ran the length of Baikal unsupported, and thought it was one of the most beautiful wildernesses we had ever seen. Excited to share in a completely new adventure there this time with my new friends!”

The Baikal expedition was fully autonomous. Ray, Stefano and their friend athlete Valerie were guiding four travellers: they shared expedition principles and strategies as well as navigation tips. The team experienced getting over hummocks and snow-covered areas, land orienteering and winter camp life. RussiaDiscovery travel company assisted the travelers in logistics and route coordination.

The group started the itinerary not far away from Sakhyurta village, passed Maloe More, crossed the lake from west to east and ended the route in Ust-Barguzin locality. A 250 km long itinerary was completed during 5 days.

If you want to have such a lifetime experience, contact Ray or Stefano to participate in their Kapik 1 expedition next year
